Ngā Ahuatanga o te kura

About our Kura

E rere kau ana te awa mai i te kāhui maunga ki Tangaroa.

Ko au te awa, ko te awa ko au.

Te Kura o Te Wainui-ā-Rua is situated in Ranana on the banks of the beautiful Whanganui River. We are a level two Māori Medium bilingual kura where tamariki are taught in both Te Reo Māori and English. Our kura is a decile 1 (the Ministry of Education socio economic rating). We are a full primary kura (Years 0-8) with a current roll of 38 tamariki. We are 62 kilometres from Whanganui city.

In 1949, the original Ranana School was opened. In 2006, Pipiriki and Parikino Schools were closed and all students were amalgamated into one kura. From Ranana School came Whanganui Awa School and then Te Wainui-ā-Rua. In 2021, the changed the name to Te Kura o Te Wainui-ā-Rua.

We are a full primary (Tau 1-8) kura with tamariki from Pipiriki to Whanganui and everywhere in between.

We are the only kura left on the river road and are fortunate to have intimate access to our awa tupua, te awa o Whanganui. Our awa provides a rich history including learning opportunities for our tamariki.

Our focus is on accelerating the progress of students and to empower them to be confident participants in Te Ao Māori. By knowing where they come from and being able to maintain tikanga, our tamariki will strive.
